Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta recognizes school board trustee Rick Massini with annual Dick Baker Legacy Award
June 9, 2025 (Calgary, AB) — The Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta (PSBAA) is honoured to recognize Rick Massini, Trustee at the Medicine Hat Public School Division (MHPSD), with the Dick Baker Legacy Award. “For me, education was much more than a career—it was my life,” says Massini. “So, upon retirement, I could not simply walk away. I’m forever thankful for the opportunities being a trustee and a member of PSBAA has brought in continuing the work of advocating for children and for public education. Thank you to my Board and to PSBAA for bestowing this honour upon me.”
Fellow trustee Catherine Wilson, Board Chair at MHPSD, nominated Massini after watching her colleague and friend embody all the values of the exceptional Dick Baker—a dedicated advocate for public education. The Dick Baker Legacy Award is bestowed on a public school board trustee who has modelled the values of integrity, compassion, respect, mentoring, leadership and engagement of the heart and mind while always putting children first.
Massini is no stranger to the triumphs and challenges of public education, after working as a teacher, school administrator and director of instruction. “His commitment to children does not only include significant contributions locally, but throughout Alberta,” says Wilson. “His involvement and passion for PSBAA is unwavering. He’s a true advocate for public education, for children and for providing the best educational opportunities for all students.”
Wilson is grateful to Massini for his mentorship. “I was fortunate to work alongside as Vice Chair with him,” says Wilson. “His open approach and trust enabled me to become the Chair I am today.”
Massini has also been integral to the success of his Board. “Rick started to adapt to a more current practice and change the approach we had at the table to a more collaborative, transparent and openness for robust conversation,” adds Wilson. “His leadership has been instrumental on our Board and for our school division.”
The PSBAA held its annual awards evening at its Spring General Assembly in Calgary on June 4. A total of five awards were presented.
