Small Steps Create Meaningful Changes | We Grow Together
Across MHPSD, efforts of students, staff and families to foster Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are taking shape through student-led initiatives, cultural celebrations, and professional learning. These actions reflect our growing commitment to creating school environments where every student and staff member feels seen, heard, and valued.
At Alexandra Middle School (AMS), a world map invites students to pin their places of origin—visually celebrating the diverse backgrounds that make up the school community. Culture clubs are active in several schools, offering students opportunities to share traditions, organize events, and build a sense of belonging. One student shared,
“Your enthusiasm over displaying varieties of culture to our school has made this place full of joy, unity and understanding.”
Cultural celebrations take many forms. French cultural performances featuring artists promote language and heritage. George Davison School’s annual Culture Fair brings together food, dance, and storytelling from around the world. MHHS’s International Culture Day showcased over 60 cultures and included a rice-cooking competition.
Student-led alliances are growing in number and diversity. MHHS is home to Black, Muslim, Gay-Straight, and emerging Hispanic Student Alliances—each offering space for students to connect and express their identities. Black History Month was marked with creative programming across schools, including the River Heights unity project, educational bulletin boards at AMS, along with weekly announcements at CHHS and a guest speaker and music-themed bingo at MHHS.
Family engagement is also a priority. “Family Connections” provides translated parenting resources in Arabic, helping families navigate Canadian culture and local news. “Coffee and Conversation” sessions offer English language practice and a welcoming space for newcomer families. At George Davison School, the school council created a large welcome sign at the front entrance, greeting visitors in 43 different languages, a powerful symbol of inclusion and respect.
Professional development continues to support staff in building inclusive practices. Recent initiatives include:
- A full PD day at MHHS focused on cultural diversity and bias education.
- A five-part anti-racist leadership series for administrators.
- A DEI Professional Learning Choice Board offering flexible learning options.
- Ramadan resources and prayer spaces now available in many schools.
MHPSD’s approach to DEI is rooted in empathy, cultural competence, and a belief that personal and academic growth happens in spaces where people feel like they belong. These efforts are helping shape a school culture where diversity is acknowledged and celebrated.
