Creative Arts
ART
Art 10
Art 10 emphasizes design and skill development. The students learn to recognize the elements and principles of design, as they are found in nature and in art, and to use them in their own creative expression. Activities include design, drawing, painting, print making, sculpture, and art history.
Art 20
This course is concerned with the organization of visual materials. Acquiring proficiency in art requires systematic instruction in how we see, interpret, and make sense of visual stimuli. It also requires an education in the use of traditional and con-temporary tools, materials and media. To achieve these goals, pro-jects are set into three categories: drawings, compositions, and encounters.
Art 30
Art 30 extends the areas of Art 10 and Art 20. Explorations of a technical or creative nature may lead to achievement of a personal style based on experiences and encounters with artists and art movements. Activities include drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and art history.
Art 21
This course surveys the history of art in western culture. It examines changes in the function of art, in the role and influences of artists, and in culture; all of which affect changes in artifacts over time. It emphasizes the changing view of art throughout history and all projects are based on this premise. Both contemporary and traditional media will be used for the projects.
Art 31
Art 31 examines the role art plays in people’s lives; how it comes into being and how people respond to it. The focus is on three major components of art: function, creation, and appreciation. It emphasizes contemporary art and its present view of society. Projects utilize a variety of materials.

MUSIC

Band 10/20/30
The MHHS Band Program welcomes all intermediate musicians with band experience from junior high school. We play a variety of styles, including standard concert pieces, marches, chorales, jazz, Broadway songs and pop. The Fall and Spring concerts, held on weekday evenings, are mandatory. We also play at Rotary Festival in March during regular class time. We have a band trip every year on a 3-year rotation: provincial, West Coast, and either Eastern Canada or international. We have an inventory of larger instruments for rent (e.g. tuba, baritone saxophone, French horn, euphonium, bass clarinet), otherwise, we require participants to provide their own (e.g. flute, clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, trombone). We would love to see you in our ensemble.
Choral Music 10/20/30
This course will emphasize vocal production and development, usually in 3-part harmony. If you are passionate about singing, please consider joining our ensemble. Besides choral singing, there are opportunities for solo’s, depending on ability, seniority, attitude and attendance. Though most of our music is in English, be prepared to sing in Italian, French, German, Japanese, Zambian and Estonian. The choir has sung at the Esplanade, the University of Calgary and at Spruce Meadows. We do music of all styles, from classical to pop to Broadway.
Guitar/Rock Band 10/20/30

We welcome both novice and experienced players. Novices are taught chords, tablature and standard music notation using nylon string guitars. Students play both individually and together in a ‘rock band’ format. Besides guitar, bass and drums, we are always on the lookout for powerful singers to provide lead vocals.
