Classroom Supports

For Teachers

Alberta Education in partnership with the ATA and other provincial organizations have designed Teacher

Quality, the Leadership Quality Standards and the Superintendent Leadership Quality Standards.

“The revision of this resource, the Teaching Quality Standard (TQS) and the complementary development of a school Leadership Quality Standard (LQS) (principal, vice-principal) and subsequent Superintendent Leadership Quality Standard (superintendent, associate superintendent) will heighten public assurance about the quality of education in Alberta and emphasize our shared commitment to develop the conditions necessary for optimal student learning for every student in every Alberta school.” (Teaching Quality and school Leadership Quality Standards - Alberta Education, January 17, 2018)

Each of these Standards highlight specifics around professional practice expectations for meeting the needs of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students.

Sept 30 Resources - National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

On September 30, MHPSD will observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by requiring all staff and students to engage in activities related to Truth and Reconciliation.

Our Board of Trustees consulted with Blackfoot Elders, our First Nations, Metis and Inuit team and our local Friendship Society and feel strongly that September 30 is a day of action. It is an opportunity to ensure that we recognize why a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is required and an opportunity for each individual to deepen their foundational knowledge.

Our FNMI team will provide a series of resources that you can access specifically on that day, in the weeks leading up to it and afterwards as well. Our key resource this year will be a structured activity around Land Acknowledgements, one that will allow all staff and students to learn more about them and even develop their own personal Land Acknowledgement.

Elementary:

Sept 30 Land Acknowledgement - Elementary Activity - this activity may be used with both primary and upper elementary students.  Please make a copy and modify as you see fit for your class.

Grades 4-12

Sept 30 Land Acknowledgement - Activities for Gr. 4-12 - This slide deck contains 6 different activities that teachers can choose from.

Sept 30th - National Day for Truth and Reconciliation  - This is an updated version of the resource document we provided for you last year.  Some of the activities are ones that you can use specifically on September 30th, most can be used as support before and after that date and of course, throughout the school year.
