 COVID 19 Outbreak at MHHS

November 15, 2020: Outbreak status - Positive case of COVID-19 identified at Medicine Hat High School.

Today Alberta Health Services (AHS) has identified an additional positive case of COVID-19 in a student at Medicine Hat High School. We have seen an increase in the number COVID-19 cases over the break, totalling three active cases as of today; we are still in an Outbreak Status as identified by AHSAn outbreak occurs when two or more individuals test positive for COVID-19, within 14 days, at the same school. Some students and staff have been directed to self-isolate for a specified period. All close contacts of the positive cases have been identified and are already self-isolating. Our thoughts remain with these individuals and their families, we wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

We know that it may be difficult to hear of a rising number of cases at our school. To this point each positive case that has been identified in an MHPSD school, including all cases at MHHS have been contracted outside of the school. Wwill continue to inform families each time there is a positive case of COVID-19 at our school.

We are working closely with AHS to ensure necessary measures are in place to keep our entire school community safe. It appears that the exposure was limited to a small group of students and staff and we are confident, based on AHS guidance, that staff and students who have not been directed to isolate can attend school safely.

Siblings and family members of close contacts are not required to self-isolate, however they are asked to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19.

We remind ALL parents/guardians of students, as well as any staff/visitors/volunteers to MHHS to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19. Please remember to complete the Alberta Daily Health Check each day prior to attending school.

Out of an abundance of caution and as we continue our focus on preventing the spread of COVID-19, we have directed our custodial services team to conduct enhanced cleaning protocols prior to the start of the school day tomorrow. This additional cleaning will focus on areas where the individuals were present along with high touch areas and surfaces throughout the school.

As a reminder, if your child has any symptoms of COVID-19 listed on the Alberta Health daily checklist, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811 and keep them home.

For more information about positive COVID-19 cases in school please read COVID-19 in Schools (k-12) setting.

The health and safety of our students and staff is our priority. We know this news can be distressing, rest assured that we will continue to work closely with AHS and the Medical Officer of Health in the South Zone to ensure that we follow their ongoing recommendations. Please contact me at boris.grisonich@sd76.ab.ca or 403.527.3371 with your questions. We will continue to provide additional information to parents/guardians as it is available, thank you for your continued support.
